Description:
Friday, 25 February 2011 HASHIGUCHI GOYO Woman Combing Her Hair Date: originally published 1920, this print is a later edition published by Watanabe Size: large oban approx. 13.8" x 18.7" overall Condition: VG, faint barely visible center fold; minor soil Impression: Fine, with mica background and texture in kimono design (see photos below). Color: Fine, deep saturated color, excellent texture and bleed through Documentation: page 43 of The Female Image: 20th Century Prints of Japanese Beauties Hotei, 2000; this print also appears in almost every catalog referencing Shin Hanga and 20th Century Japanese art. It is one of the most recognizable prints of the era. Watanabe is now publishing this design. It is a new release in the past two months. I would guess that Watanabe either rented or purchased Yu-yu do's blocks and that all previous editions are exhausted from that publisher. Not a fake I'm afraid, but a new edition. - belsipe
