Description:
The archipelago of eighty-eight rocky islets, large and small, some of them being merely tiny rocks projecting from the sea, is one of the famous sights of Japan, and one of the most beautiful.--Gookin Matsushima (Pine islands), an archipelago of numerous pine-clad islets is one of the most celebrated and beautiful spots in Japan. Hiroshige has fit as many as possible into his design and has identified them for the viewer. The names read from lower left: Tsukiboshi, Nakome, Shirahama, Sarubayashi, Name, Tano, Komachi and to the rear, Kakota, Shirohama (again), Hanabushi and Cape Soma.--Swinton
