Description:
Print no. 1 of the series: "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" During the Edo period, bridges were scarce, so travelers typically forded streams on foot, boarded ferries, or were carried across by porters. As more bridges were built, they often offered people various views of a single place and gave rise to ingenious and distinctive designs. The Togetsukyo or “moon-crossing bridge” depicted here remains a popular tourist attraction on the western side of the ancient capital of Kyoto, in part due to its spectacular views of Mount Arashi.
