Description:
The main torii gate of the Itsukushima Shrine near Hiroshima stands in the water of Miyajima Bay. For over 800 years on a night in June, the shrine’s greatest festival has been celebrated on the bay. With decorated floats and lanterns hanging from the rigging of the other vessels, the festival features music played with flutes, drums and stringed instruments, reminiscent of the Heian Period (794−1185). Today it is considered one of the finest float festivals in Japan.
