Description:

Print no. 27 of the series: "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" The path on which Hiroshige portrays people climbing up behind a cascading curtain of water gave this waterfall its name. 'Urami' roughly translates as “rear-view waterfall” and comes from a poem by the Buddhist monk and poet Matsuo Basho, who visited the falls in 1689. Today in Japan, one can take “Basho tours” that retrace the poet’s famous journeys and writings, including this popular waterfall in present-day Nikko National Park.
