Description:
Print no. 59 of the series: "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" The Japanese grenadier anchovy is a rare species of fish that can only be caught in the lower Chikugo River. The sought after fish are available from May to July when they swim upriver from the sea to spawn. Hiroshige depicts a bird’s-eye view of a fish weir constructed to trap the fish on their way upstream.
