Description:

First Edition: 100 Views of Edo Artist: Hiroshige I Format: Oban tate-e: 14" x 9.5" Subject: 'The Moon Pine, Ueno'. A view of the southern part of the island where the Benten Shrine was situated in the middle of the pond, with the red of the main sanctuary barely visible to the lower right. On the far shore is a row of commoners' houses, now Ikenohata 1-2-chome; above, we can make out three separate fire towers, which lay within the compounds of various daimyo estates on the Hongo rise. The tower that appears within the loop of the pine is probably that of the main estate of Maeda, lord of Kaga; today this land belongs the Tokyo University. This like the previous lot, is first edition printing, in this case with a two color sub-cartouche. Publisher: Uoya Eikichi Date: 8th Month 1857 Condition: Fine colors. Trimmed on bottom, and slightly trimmed on left margin. Album binding holes along right edge. Two tiny tapes from a previous mounting on superior corners on verso. Generally fine state of preservation. Impression: Fine impression of the first edition with strong woodgrain, green shading and mica at the top of the tree branch.
