Description:

Located in present day Shizuoka, the fifteenth station on the Tökaidö of Yoshiwara was different from the famed pleasure quarter called Yoshiwara outside Edo (modern Tokyo). Hiroshige depicts pine trees lining the road, their branches extending over the travelers’ heads. The trees were planted to provide shelter from unpleasant weather conditions. At the same time, Hiroshige might have exaggerated the presence of the branches to add visual interest by creating a tunnel-like passageway out of the trees.
