Description:
From the series "Nihon Banzai; Hyakusen Hyakusho" ("Hurrah Japan; One Hundred Collected Laughs"), "Shinpei no Hiya Kasare" (Chinese Soldiers Cooled). The title was punned for the meaning of "One Hundred Battles, One Hundred Victories", also. Kiyochika studied Western style newspaper caricatures, especially the ones by London journalist Charles Wirgman (1832-91). He applied the new humorous looks to the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese war print series, which became very popular.
