The Ichiriki Teahouse scene from the eleven-act Kabuki theatre play Chushingura: The Treasury of the Loyal Retainers (Kanadehon Chushingura, 1748), which memorialized a true-life vendetta (1701-3), became a favorite pillar-print motif. The depiction of the so-called Ichiriki-ya scene required the vertical composition of three figures. Koryusai created at least six different designs of the subject.
