Description:

Onoe Baiko V (1844–1903) clutches his hands together in the role of the villain Iwakura Sōgen in Drift of Flowers (Hanafubuki). The play deals with the priest Sōgen’s infatuation with the beautiful courtesan Irokotohime, as he breaks his priestly vow of chastity and is left bereft by her early death. This first edition uses superlative carving and printing techniques, particularly in the individual hairs on Sōgen’s head. The embossing of the rich creamy-white paper adds three-dimensionality to the fallen snow.
