From the series, Japanese Brocades from the Genroku Period, which tells the story of Chushingura, the 47 Ronin, legendary samurai who avenged the death of their lord. The lacquer box that he is striking at is printed in urushi-e. The samurai pictured is known as a fine swimmer.
