Description:

Shin Hanga: New Ukiyo-e Beauties Compared: February - Wintry Sky Artist: Yamamura Koka Format: Large Oban tate-e: 16.25" x 10.5" Subject: This collaborative series of c. 1924 included the contributions by eleven different artists on the customs and manners of beauties corresponding to the twelve months. It was published by Murakami, about whom little is known except for issuing this series. According to the scholar Asano Shugo, the series seems to have been, for the greater part, produced employing the coloration and compositions drawn from original paintings. Asano speculates that this print may have been carved by Koka himself and further believes that in comparison with the other works in the series, February, is unusual. February stands as an example of Koka's bijin style in which he has adopted the profile view frequently used in his actor prints to portray a young woman bracing herself against the Winter cool. The color palette of dark greens and black also recalls a number of his actor prints. Subject illustrated 'The New Wave' prints from the Robert O. Muller Collection P 154, #184 Publisher: Murakami Date: c. 1924 Condition: Full size. Minor soils and edge damages. Generally fine state. Colour: Fine colors. Impression: Fine impression with gauffrage and mica.
