Description:
Prince Genji Woodblock Print by Kunisada II An 1857 woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada II, the top pupil and son-in-law of the first Kunisada. This print comes from a series on the Genji Monogatari, the 11th century classic concerning an Imperial prince, his life and loves. This print shows Prince Genji with one of his lovers beside a stream. A torch burns at the banks, as the woman tugs on Genji's sleeve. This series has yellow, speckled borders, meant to suggest the gold-flecked papers of the Heian Period. The title is in paired shells with a Genji crest, a reference to a popular game in the Edo Period. The print measures 14 by 9 1/2 inches, borders on all sides. The colors and condition are very good. The white of the title shell is embossed. Signed Kachoro Kunisada with aratame censor seal and date seal snake 10 (1857). The publisher is Tsutaya Kichizo.
