Description:
Hiratsuka, from the series "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) This woman and her male traveling companion stop to look at a water bird flying up from the marshes along the road. While there are human figures in Hokusai's most famous landscape prints, such as the "Great Wave" print or the "Red Mt. Fuji", they play almost no role in the scene presented. Here, in a relatively early print by Hokusai, we can see that the central role is taken by human figures and their surrounding environment.
