One Hundred Views of Edo: # 106 Artist: Hiroshige I Format: Oban tate-e: 14.25" x 9.5" Subject: 'Fukagawa Lumberyards'. In this, one of several famous snow scenes in the 'Winter' group, Hiroshige offers an evocative view within the lumberyards of the Fukagawa area. The leaning poles and near banks echo the movement of the water, as does the descending zigzag of paired life forms: two sparrows, two loggers, two puppies, and finally the artist and us, gazing over the scene from under the pale yellow umbrella at the bottom, personalized with the 'fish' mark of the publisher Uoei. Publisher: Uoya Eikichi Date: 1856 Condition: Fine colors. Very slightly trimmed on left margin. Numbered in pencil bottom right corner. Minor marks and soils. Generally very good state of preservation. Impression: Fine impression of the second state with extensive use of mica in the bokashi at top, gauffrage and a black sky. This set with the dark sky is usually crudely printed from worn blocks. This crisp example was obviously an early experiment by the printers,
