Description:
Fires were frequent in the Yoshiwara brothel district. Following these occasions, temporary lodgings would be set up outside the district. This print depicts one morning at a temporary lodging, where courtesans in kimono undergarments are chatting and relaxing. A woman lies outside a mosquito curtain on the floor talking to a man smoking a pipe. A second courtesan dresses herself behind a screen. The center panel shows a servant awaiting orders while another courtesan touches him provocatively. Other guests of the brothel are leaving the upstairs area while courtesans bid them farewell. This print shows the variety of luxury materials and designs used for nightwear. (from "VOGUE in Japan: Edo Fashion through Japanese prints" exhibition 07/30/08-)
