Description:

“A butterfly and tree-peony provide Hokusai with one of his most successful compositions. The upper parts of the bushy shrub, with its large flowers, sway in the breeze, and a butterfly struggles in the gust to perch on the plant--an instant drama in nature. Flowers and birds were among the most popular subjects for Japanese paintings because of their physical beauty and their association with seasons."" (Yoko Woodson, Hiroshige and Hokusai, cat. 90)
