Description:

Sent to China, Abe studied the Chinese calendar. This print probably depicts the poet at the emperor's feast. Yet it is said that kept prisoner, Abe eventually starved to death. Before dying, however, he bit his thumb and wrote a poem in blood traditionally associated with this scene: ""I gaze up at the fields of Heaven and wonder Is this the same moon that rose Over distant Mt. Mikasa At my home in Kasuga?"" (translated by Dr. Richard Lane) (from “100 Poems, One Poem Each” exhibition, 1/18/2005-)
