Description:
Totsuka, the sixth station on the Tökaidö, is located in what is currently the city of Yokohama. The dark blue used for the figures’ kimono is a synthetic ink imported from Europe, Berlin blue (beroai ), which was first introduced to Japan in the late 18th century. The artist Katsushika Hokusai frequently used this color, popularizing it in his masterpiece series, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.
