Description:
A large port city, the nineteenth station from Edo on the Tökaidö of Ejiri was located in what is currently Shizuoka Prefecture. The design of this landscape print is based on a picture of the Miho promontory as seen from Mount Kuno, recorded in Hara Arimasa’s late 18th century travel guide, Illustrated Book of Famous Places on the Tökaidö Road. Several designs in Hiroshige’s Fifty-Three Stations of the Tökaidö series are derived from earlier publications, calling into question the theory that the series is based on observations and sketches the artist made during a trip along the Tökaidö accompanying an official procession in 1832.
