Description:
Colour woodblock print, oban triptych from an album of 117 sheets. The scene is the confrontation of the Soga brothers, set before a daimyo’s mansion. In the front row, from right: the kabuki actors Matsumoto Koshiro V as Omi no Kotota, and Suketakaya Takasuke II as Yawata no Saburo (right sheet); Onoe Matsusuke I as Kudo Suketsune seated before his open palanquin, Onoe Eizaburo I as Soga no Goro with both hands clutching a wooden stand (sanbo) on which sits a saké cup, and Matsumoto Takejuro I as Kobayashi Asahina holding Goro back from behind (centre sheet); Sawamura Gennosuke I as Soga no Juro, and Nakayama Tomisaburo I as Onio’s wife Tsukisayo, both looking on anxiously (left sheet); in the play ‘Ume yanagi sakigake Soga’ by Namiki Gohei I; performed at the Ichimura-za from the 1st month of 1806.
