Description:
Woodblock print, oban tate-e. Memorial portrait (shini-e) of the actor Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, who committed suicide at 32 on the sixth day of the eighth month of the seventh year of the period Kaei (1854) following an argument with an Osaka actor, Nakamura Tomijuro, with a valedictory poem by Umeya, in an elegant orange robe, on his knees in a ceremonial bowing position to the audience, a sword lies beside him.
