Description:
Colour woodblock print, oban triptych. The interior of the Nakamura-za theatre in Edo during a performance of the act ‘Kikaigashima’ from the play ‘Shunkan futatsu omokage’ in the 3rd month of 1800. Of the kabuki actors (centre sheet), standing at the back and holding out a folded letter bearing the word ‘jo’ (‘above’) is Ichikawa Danzo IV as the bearded priest Shunkan; kneeling directly next to him is Iwai Kumesaburo I as Oyasu, with an unidentified actor as a young girl standing behind; at the front of the stage, from left, is Ichikawa Tomozo II, standing, as either the villain Seno-o no Taro or Ariomaru; kneeling in front of him holding out a drawn sword is Ichikawa Komazo III as Kameomaru; facing him, also kneeling is Nakamura Sukegoro II as Miyama no Honzo; with two other unidentified actors behind him.
