Colour woodblock print, oban, uki-e. View of Oboshi Yuranosuke’s residence in Yamashina, close to Kyoto, from Act IX, ‘Yamashina kankyo’, of the play ‘Kanadehon Chushingura’ by Takeda Izumo II, Miyoshi Shoraku and Namiki Senryu. In the room furthest away on the right is Yuranosuke himself with a sword in hand speaking to five others; in the central room is Honzo’s wife Tonase with a sword raised above her head about to kill their daughter Konami; and in the closest room, left, is Yuranosuke’s wife Oishi carrying a ceremonial stand (‘sanbo’) speaking to her son Oboshi Rikiya; outside the garden gate, disguised as an itinerant ‘komuso’ priest and wearing a deep sedge hat with a bamboo shakuhachi in his hand is Tonase’s husband Kakogawa Honzo.
