Description:
Champion sumo wrestler, Chiyonofuji (right). He was one of the best "yokozuna" who won more than 800 times during his career. In 1984, he was defeated by a new comer, Konishiki from Hawaii. It caused a sensation. Konishiki later became "ozeki" which was one rank below the grand champion, "Yokozuna". After some 80 years of absence, the Japan Sumo Association commissioned the making of traditional nishiki-e style woodblock printing to publisher Kyoto Hanga-in, artist Daimon, carver Kishima and printer Ito in 1985. These new Sumo Nishiki-e are sold in Ryogoku Kokugi-kan in Tokyo.
