Double-page book illustration Illustration from vol. I of Ehon Tokiwagusa (A Picture Book of Evergreens); signed sakusha gako (author and conceiver) Bunkado Nishikawa Sukenobu (1671-1751); carvers Fujimura Zen'emon and Murakami Gen'emon of Osaka; preface dated 1730 (Kyoho 15); issued by Morita Shotaro of Osaka in the 8th month 1731 (Kyoho 16). Tama-ko (1101-1145), a daughter of Fujiwara Kinazane, was the wife of Toba-tenno, the 74th Emperor of Japan, and the mother of the emperors Sutoku and Go-shirakawa. In 1123 Toba abdicated in favor of his young son Sutoku; and in 1124 Tama-ko became a Buddhist nun and was given the name of Taiken-mon-in. She is here depicted in earlier life in a room of the Imperial palace, attended by another court lady.
