Description:

Tuesday, 16 November 2010 Original Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) Japanese Woodblock Print Gojo Bridge, 1881 Comments - Terrific original Yoshitoshi illustration of the great battle on Gojo Bridge between the warrior monk, Benkei, and the young Ushiwakamaru, the childhood name of the noted swordsman Yoshitsune. The agile young warrior leaps into the air above the bridge railing at right, reaching for his sword as he easily dodge's Benkei's blows. Benkei grips a pole arm with both hands as he lunges forward, stepping on the white cloak that Ushiwakamaru has just slipped out of. An enormous full moon glows softly above the dark mountains, the curve of the bridge leading off into the distance. A fantastic interpretation of this classic tale, with the large figures creating a dramatic composition. Beautiful soft bokashi shading in the night sky, and fine wood grain impression, a sign of an early print. The black areas of Benkei's armor are detailed with burnishing, and a dusting of mica adds a subtle touch to the outlines of the mountains. A great subject for a samurai enthusiast or Yoshitoshi collector. Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28" + margins as shown Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. Small losses at three corners, slight thinning at top left edge of left panel, a few small holes, repaired, blends well. Slight soiling and creasing, very slight rubbing along top edge in margin only. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
