Description:

Japanese Woodblock by Utamaro ‘Beauty Reading Scroll’ (c1927) A rare and very early Showa era woodblock “re-strike” (that is, produced from re-carved blocks) by Japan’s early grandmaster of “ukiyo-e,” Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) and published by Fusui Gabo Publishers (lower right margin, see second scan) of Tokyo (active 1920’s/30’s). Scene is of a beauty seen reading a rolled scroll; originally published in the late-1790’s/early 1800’s. (Prints by this publisher?Fusui Gabo?are rarely seen; a great “find” by consignee who stumbled upon a dealer and purchased his remaining 2 prints.) A very early Showa re-strike?according to another reference, circa 1927. The printing quality and details of these Fusui Gabo “re-strikes” are exceptionally fine, truly rivaling that of the early originals. Very finely carved details and individual hairlines. Also note?entire background surface is over-printed using “mica” imparting a sumptuous appearance to the final print. Condition is excellent, as print shows no signs of any prior mounting. Full, untrimmed, original margins. Very lightly toned front side (very “mellow”). Bright, fresh colors. Image measures 9" x 14" inches.
