Saturday, 22 January 2011 UEMURA SHOKO Arakida from the series Eight Views of Mikawajima Date: original 1957 Image Size: oban 15 " x 10.5" Condition: VG, no flaws, see enlargements below Impression: VG, strong key lines and texture, embossing on the clothing and masks Color: VG, deep saturated color, excellent texture and bleed through UEMURA SHOKO was born in 1904 in Kyoto, Japan, the son of Uemura Shoen a noted woodblock artist of the Taisho and Showa eras. In 1948 he established Sozo Bijutsu, an association of nihon-ga artists. Among his words are kacho-e carved by Okura Hanbei and published by Unsodo, Kyuryudo, and Bijutsu Shoin. In 1985 he was elected to the Order of Cultural Merit of Japan. Prints by Uemura Shoko are rarely seen.
