Description:
This Japanese woodblock's subject is a beautiful pagoda; what makes this woodblock special, though, is an advanced technique known as guaffrage, or embossing. It appears in this print on the clouds, giving a three dimensional effect. Known in Japanese as "karazuri", it is subtle yet takes the woodblock to a new height artistically. The artist's signature appears in red on the bottom left (as shown). The size of the work is about 8 by 10 inches. There is minor damp-staining in the upper left and on the left upper portion of the pagoda, but the colors are vivid and the artwork is superb.
