Description:
Tomikichiro Tokuriki designed woodblock prints for two distinct genre: shin hanga and sosaku hanga. Shin hanga are very representative and tend to deal with traditional Japanese settings and costumes whereas sosaku hanga are more impressionistic making no pretense of photorealism. This print of an owl, one of a number that I recently acquired, is more in the spirit of sosaku hanga. It is simple but not austere. Like most of Tokuriki's sosaku it has an element of playfulness. One interesting feature - Tokuriki signed this print twice - once at the bottom and once once on the branch to the left of the owl. The image measures 13.25"x9" (approx.) The only condition issue is printer ink in the margins - mostly the left. Other than that it is in excellent condition.
