Description:

Early Original Terauchi Watercolor Boats Night Fishing Up for auction here is a wonderful and fine original Japanese watercolor from the 1930's that was done by the artist Fukutaro Terauchi (1891 - ?) for the Japanese tourist trade to bring home as a souvenir of one's trip to Japan. This is signed at lower right, and it depicts a night fishing scene in a bay harbor somewhere in Japan, presumably near Yokohama, which is what the framing label on verso says "Minato Trading Co. Picture & Picture Frame No 82.2 Chome. Motomachi. Nakaku. Yokohama tel No. 3009 (Honkyoku)". The piece is very fine and competently done, the night scene is well captured, and the atmospheric haze is stunning as one can see the dimension and depth of the shadows of the other fishing boats in the distance under teh bright full moon. This measures 15.5 x 20", and it is wondefully framed in wooden pegged corner bamboo. It is in great condition, there has been a waterstain to top area, but can only be seen on matte, not in the painted watercolor area.
