Description:
Saturday, 27 September 2008 Bidding is on a genuine Japanese woodblock print by Tamami Shima, titled "Bell Tower". Size is double oban, 17" by 24". The artist, a 1958 graduate of Women's College of Fine Arts in Tokyo, is noted for her particular skill with woodgrain to achieve effects. This fine piece has three types of woodgrain, a mottled effect in the plain foreground, a granular effect in the stone pavement, and a speckled effect in the clouds, showing breaks. Also of note is the use of the expressionist style caramel colored trees, which are, I believe hand applied and not part of the woodblock. The pigment on the trees is very heavy and shows brush marks. This print is pencil signed in the lower margin and also in the print as "Tamami 59". It is not numbered. Overall condition is very good, light toning in the margins, two tiny specks of age spotting in the top margin. The print was framed, but shows no effect. The reverse has minor toning and a small piece of tape showing the title and artist.
