Description:

10/01/2005 Title Thinking Artist Hao Ping born 1952 Signature Signed and numbered by the artist in pencil. Dated 2004 Technique/Medium Woodcut Impression Printed in oil-based inks on a pliable, Chinese paper of middle thickness. Edition Size 80 Numbered 10/80 Description "Thinking" We have no idea how Hao Ping approaches the design of a new print image. He must either be a natural genius or he follows some architectural approach, building a design step by step like an architect who designs a new building. The result is an astonishing equilibrium of complimentary colors, flat areas of different sizes, and always a certain compositional dynamic. The impression of "thinking" is achieved completely by the gesture of the oversized hand leaning towards the chin. Even the foot underlines the sentiment of thinking - it looks like bent against the body in a certain inner tension. Note Hao Ping is one of the 60 contemporary Chinese woodblock artists selected for the collection of the London based Muban Foundation.
