Description:
Hi all, got a nice Nouet print recently, see attached image. It is dated 1950 (right lower corner, next to the signature) and bears the Doi Hangaten publisher seal with the typical Harada/Yokoi carver/printer information. This is the first time we have this publisher seal together with a postwar date, indicating that the triple offset Hangaten seal got used in the fifties, probably already 1950 or even earlier (supposed, this print is not a later edition). Greetings, Andreas Artist Noel Nouet (1885-1969) (Active 1935-37, left Japan 1962) Title "Kanda Miyojin, Tokyo" ("Tokyo -- Kanda Myojin") Date 1950 (early printing by Yokoi, likely 1956-62) Series "Scenes of Tokyo Views" ("Tokyo fukkei zen nijuyon mai") (Learn more: ("The Woodblock Prints of Noel Nouet"). Publisher Doi Hangaten (with Doi "watermark" upper left) Carver/Printer Harada/Yokoi Image Size 9 3/8 x 14 1/4 Impression Fine. Superbly executed "bokashi" shading; nicely visible "woodgrain" in sky; very finely carved details, crisp key-lines. Condition Nearly Excellent. Strong colors; clean backside. (Very slight age-toning, light wear; dealer's thin paper hinges top verso; minor printing wrinkles very top margin.) Reference/Illus na Comments Gorgeous red temple print, with left tip of roofline artfully extending beyond left image edge. It is believed that the extremely fine lines seen in the "key-blocks" of Noute's prints may have, in fact, been produced using zinc plates. (Learn more.)
