Description:
Saturday, 26 March 2011 M. Matsu Takemura Watercolor Painting 1930s Geisha I just purchased this vintage Japanese watercolor painting from a local estate here in Central Virginia. The painting was done by M. Matsu and is signed "M Matsu" in English on the lower right corner. Ross Walker (Ohmi Gallery) notes that Matsu was a pre-WWII Japanese artist / active in the mid to late 1930's. The watercolor also bears the "H. TAKEMURA & CO." "45 Bentendori" "Yokohama, Japan" gallery sticker on the back. Walker notes that Takemura was active in the 1930's which further reinforces the pre-war dating of this piece. The watercolor is beautifully executed showing a geisha walking down a dimly lit street at night. The artist does a wonderful job of using the lighting from the windows to illuminate the foreground. The painting shows very fine detail throughout the buildings, signage, single ornamental lantern and geisha. The work measures 13 1/2" x 10" with a 1/4" open border. The painting is in excellent condition with no tears, creases or surface wear. The colors appear bright and vibrant with no apparent fading. This M. Matsu painting would make a nice addition to any collection of 1930's Japanese folk art or vintage Geisha inspired art. (The border dimensions are square, it appears curved on the edges because it isn't mounted.)
