Thursday, 25 August 2005 Kuchi-e: Heian Court Bijin and Armour Artist: Kobori Tomoto Format: Aiban tate-e: 11.25" x 8.25" Subject: A young Heian court bijin packing armour into a black lacquer chest, by the light of an oil lamp. Tomoto Kobori was born in Tochigi prefecture. He studied Western painting in Tokyo and became a close friend to Kajita Hanko, Tomioka Eisen and Terasaki Kogyo. In 1897 Kobori became professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. After the turn of the century he was widely accepted as a painter and honored with many memberships in state controlled art institutions like the Imperial Fine Arts Academy. Although mainly a painter, Tomoto Kobori made a number of kuchi-e on historical subjects. Date: 1900's Condition: Full size. Mounted on a mica decorated card. Light horizontal fold marks. Minor marks and flaws. Generally very good state. Colour: Fine Impression: Fine with gauffrage
