Description:
This is a very rare double oban size sosaku hanga Japanese woodblock print by Kiyoshi Saito (1907-1997) titled "Winter in Aizu (8)". This print is an icon of Kiyoshi Saito's works. The print is sealed in the image, pencil signed by the artist, and dated 1958. Image size is 15" x 21", paper size is 18" x 23.5". The print is in very good condition. No foxing, toning or folds. The print is not trimmed or setdown. Fine impression, excellent color, and bleedthrough. There are several very soft creases in the print due to the use of un-sized Kizuki hosho paper. Sizing give paper that crisp stiff characteristic texture. Un-sized paper is soft and clothlike. Saito used un-sized Kizuki hosho paper on the early Winter in Aizu series to acheive a "soft effect" (reference:Modern Japanese Prints: An Art Reborn, by Oliver Statler, page 57).
