Description:
This is a very striking original early sosaku hanga modern Japanese woodblock print by Kazue Yamagishi (1893-1966). Print is titled "American Indians Weaving", dated Showa 3 (1928) signed and sealed in the image. A very rare early self-carved, self-printed sosaku hanga Southwest image, possibly Taos or Santa Fe, by a contemporary of Koshiro Onchi. Yamagishi carved for Onchi, Takehisa Yumeji, Kaburagi Kiyokata, Hiroshi Yoshida and Paul Jacoulet. Yamagishi traveled throughout the US from 1926 through 1929, and this print was created during that period (Guide to Modern Japanese Woodblock Prints: 1900-1975, by Helen Merritt and Nanako Yamada) The print is in very good condition. Fine impression, very good color, registration and very good bleedthrough. No foxing, toning or folds. There are some soft handling creases in the margins that do not affect the image. The print is not trimmed or setdown. Print size is 13.5" x 16.5"
