Description:

Monday, 29 August 2005 This fantastic Hasui print (and another, similar one) just came out of a San Francisco estate. It depicts the coastline of Fukushima, as seen from Nakoso at sunset. A man and woman walk down the seaside road, with baskets on their backs. Five trees are silhouetted against the dramatic sunset sky. As was Hasui’s (and Watanabe’s) specialty, there are no less than four different areas of bokoshi! Appropriately, it’s titled "Sunset Glow at Nakoso". I can’t read the notations in the left margin, but I know that the image dates from 1954. I don’t know exactly when this print was pulled, but it bears the red Watanabe seal in the lower-right corner. The seal appears to be 6.5mm in diameter, meaning that it was printed by no later than 1957, when Hasui died and Watanabe Shozaburo switched to a black, 7mm diameter seal. Consequently, I’m certain that this is a "lifetime" print. It bears Hasui’s red seal in the lower-right corner. It’s a full oban size, with the sheet measuring 15-1/4" x 10-3/8". The print’s condition is perfect! The back of the sheet shows excellent bleed-through. It’s properly hinged along the left edge to its original paper matte folder.
