Description:
Shiro Kasamatsu print "Red Cherry Blossoms at Josokoji Temple, Kyoto"; self-published 1967; 9.5"x14.5" (Grund, S-85). The self-published prints of Shiro Kasamatsu are closer in spirit to the sosaku hanga movement than to the shin hanga. They tend to be more 'painterly' than his prints for Watanabe which are more akin to drawing. As in many of his other self-published prints, Shiro Kasamatsu has evoked feelings of both serenity and unease. The glowing tree and the temple are juxtaposed with the darkness of the trees to the right. This print is generally in very good condition. The issues include ink smudges on the right margin (common on the self-published prints), a (not sticky) spot on the verso of the top right margin and top margin thinning both from a previous mounting, and what appears to be a collector's seal at the bottom right corner. The top margin does have some toning, but the digital photo exaggerates this .
