Description:
Shiro Kasamatsu print "Bridges in Nagasaki"; self-published 1967; 9.5"x14.5" (Grund, S-86). The self-published prints of Shiro Kasamatsu are closer in spirit to the sosaku hanga movement than to the shin hanga. Carved and printed by Kasamatsu, they tend to be more 'painterly' than his prints for Watanabe which are more akin to drawing. A notable feature of this print is the use of a very strong foreground element (tree limbs) to provide a sense of perspective. Hiroshige also used this technique in some of his prints. This print is generally in very good condition. The issues include ink smudges on the right margin (common on the self-published prints), a (not sticky) spot on the verso of the top right margin and top margin thinning both from a previous mounting, and what appears to be a collector's seal at the bottom right corner. The top margin does have some toning, but the digital photo exaggerates this .
