Description:
Shiro KASAMATSU (1898-1991) "Inokashika Shrine" (8 Views of Tokyo) 1953 Print size is 15.75" x 10.75" RARE First Edition Pristine condition. No tears, folds or creases. Paper is nicely mellowed from age. This print is perfect in every way. Strong image bleedthrough to verso Master Kasamatsu was reknowned for his romantic landscapes depicting traditional Japanese life and landmarks. His use of foreground elements, like branches, to draw in the viewer and give the image depth, was a design technique first employed by Ukiyo-e Master Hiroshige. This rare, first edition strike evidences the all-important double carver (Nagashima)/printer (Shinmi) seals as well as the artist seal. Master Shinmi is quite elderly and has long been retired. The rare first edition of any print is coveted by collectors world-wide, especially from a great master such as KASAMATSU. This rarely seen winter image was a rare find, indeed. There were 6 only first edition prints of this spectacular image available in the archives of the publisher. AmTech purchased all of them. Once these 5 are sold, they are gone forever. The colours of this rare, old print, are truly amazing, and as fresh as the day they were struck. The sophisticated printing technique of bokashi (gradation of colour), is used extensively throughout this print. The Publisher stored these prints with meticulous care over these past 50 years.
