Description:
Toyohara Chikabonu (1838-1912), a disciple of Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900), is, together with his contemporary Yoshitoshi Taiso (1839-1892), one of the leading artists of the Meiji period. His favorite subjects were legends and histories from Japan's historical and mythological past, as well as genre scenes with women and children, in which he excelled. Like Yoshitoshi, many of his prints concentrate on the history and traditional values of old Japan, and can be seen as a defense of Japanese traditional values and customs in an era when Japan was thriving to adopt Western technology and civilization. This print belongs to a spectacular de luxe series, Edo Nishiki ? Color Images of Edo, and shows three ladies in a balcony enjoying the evening breeze. Series: Edo Nishiki ?
