Description:

This is the left side of a diptych. The location of the right side is unknown. If both were present, the diptych would likely show a pair of dolls associated with the Doll Festival, or Girls' Day (the third day of the third month of the lunar calendar). The festival is said to have started in the early seventeenth century. The print portrays an empress doll wearing an elegant robe seated in front of luxury items such as lacquer food containers, a mirror stand, and a shell game set. Based on the style of the objects depicted, the design has been dated to the 1720s. (from Original Intent 11/21/06-)
