Description:

In this landscape series, "Famous Places in the Style of Dutch Oil Painting," Kunisada tries to depict a Western-style wooden frame. On the upper left side, his signature is written horizontally (as opposed to the usual Japanese vertical signature). A number of ukiyo-e artists sought new styles and methods of depicting objects in order to satisfy the sophisticated city people of Edo. Many nineteenth-century European impressionists were inspired by their art. Thus, there arose a remarkable mutual interest between them. (2008)
