Description:

Hiroshige’s artistic career was intimately connected with his home city of Edo and nearby Mount Fuji, and in addition to his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, he produced several other series dedicated to views of the city, which sometimes prominently feature the mountain in the background. This print depicts Tamagawa Village at dawn, with the Tama River as a focal point for human activity. On the left, a man is going back home after fishing, while another is still trying to catch shellfish. In the foreground, two women are washing clothes. Mount Fuji stands in the background as a symbol of constancy and protection. “Hokusai’s Summit: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” (09/24/2009-01/06/2010) ******************************
