Description:

Hasui first studied nihonga (Japanese-style painting) as a child. Later, he apprenticed under Kaburagi Kiyokata (1878-1973), a leading artist of nihonga and woodblock prints. He also studied with the well-known seiyöga (Western-style painting) artist Okada Saburösuke (1869-1939). Hasui was affiliated with the Hakubakai, a group of Western-style artists that included Kuroda Seiki, founded in 1896. With such extensive training, Hasui was well positioned to create powerful art that blended stylistic elements from both the East and the West. In particular, Hasui combined Western techniques such as perspective and shading with familiar Japanese themes, motifs, and compositions. (from Nostalgic Japan exhibition 6/8/2005-)
