This design was published on "Bijutsu Sekai" (The World of Art) Vol.12. Bijutsu Sekai was a large picture album series compiled by Seitei WATANABE introducing the works of well known artists of Meiji and Edo era. This one depicts the fiery Fudo-myo-o who appeared in young priest Yuten's dream. Fudo is one of the five "Kings of Wisdom" in the Shingon sect of esoteric Buddhism. The legend said that after Yuten swallowed Fudo's sword, he attained great wisdom.
